DESIGNER + GARDENER + MAKER

Welcome to my suburban garden and home studio in Whanganui, NZ. I'm an ex-social policy manager, retrained garden designer with a special interest in how people can (re)build sufficiency, and making skills into our modern lives.

Our natural world has a remarkable capacity to encourage, cheer, and bring joy and well-being, even within our smallest, most everyday routines and moments. I aim to make and design in a way that observes, explores and embraces that.

This is a micro operation, intentionally so. In both the garden and design studio, I garden and design with principles that are kind to everyone using the garden, from invertebrates to humans. You can learn more about my training and growing methods below.

I guess the question I’m seeking to answer is: what (and how much) can I ask of my garden, to contribute positively to our lives - in both beauty and harvest? If you’re also curious, I’m happy to share my observations with you!

HOW I MANAGE MY GARDEN

  • I garden with a balance of beauty, practicality, and care for the wider environment.

    Methods are guided by observation and ecological consideration rather than rigid rules. I work with seasonal rhythms, soil health, and plant relationships to create gardens that feel alive, resilient, and deeply connected to place.

  • We prioritise:

    Soil-first gardening
    Healthy gardens begin below ground. I focus on building soil structure and microbial life through composting, mulching, and gentle, low-disturbance practices.

    Thoughtful inputs
    Where amendments or treatments are needed, I favour minimal, considered interventions. I lean towards natural, low-toxicity options and avoid chemical use.

    Working with nature
    Rather than forcing outcomes, I design and maintain gardens that cooperate with natural processes: biodiversity, beneficial insects, and ecological balance.

    Seasonal awareness
    Embracing the natural ebb and flow of the garden. Periods of rest, growth, abundance, and decline are all part of a healthy landscape.

    Long-term resilience
    The goal is not perfection, but gardens that age beautifully, adapt well, and require less intervention over time.

  • Whilst my practice is shaped and informed by organic and regenerative principles, specific techniques are always adapted to suit my site and situation.

    My goal is is to share my garden and design process and learnings. I aim to garden with everyone in mind, and promote spaces that support the diversity and ecosystem as a whole.
